William Allen School hired me for an every child
fine arts residency. This is in progress at the moment of this writing. I
am presenting a full sculptural experience for the classrooms of grades
K-5 via clay molds, paper casting, painting and finishing the work
based in the theme of Our Emotions in Masks. The project is cross
curricular with their reading program. I also introduced the idea of how
emotions effect our lives and others as well as what it means to
express them. We too have looked at the historical, cultural and
artistic use of masks from around the world using books which I have
supplied for use in the school.
The following is an excerpt from their website:
“Over the next 7 weeks, Ms. Larochelle will be working with
every classroom in the school, sharing books and helping students to
make ‘emotion’ masks. [...] they will be displayed at our Learning Fair
in April. Be sure to come and view these fine pieces of art!”
This process is very successful with most all age students,
however for the Kindergarten classes I adapted a method of mask making
scaled more for little hands. We are using aluminum foil to sculpt the
faces with and then to apply paint for finishing. There have been a lot
of excited and happy faces with the work as well as positive feedback
with the teachers on these processes. The work has all taken place in
the classroom.
