Masks! Larger then Life: Our Emotions in Sculpture
In fall 2002 academyartworks student made, large scale masks
based on the idea of emotions and other masks from around the world. For
two weeks the students studied about different types of masks from 20
different cultures and drew initial sketches of what they wanted to
express in a huge scale mask. These children (48 of them) worked very
hard without much help from me in creating the armature, the papermache
layers as well as the finishing and embellishment of their creations.
The Children’s Museum contacted me to have an exhibit of these masks in
November 2002 and the children were delighted with the chance to exhibit
publically.
Each mask has it’s own personality as well as a larger family
with the others of which it was created with. Our goal with the masks
was met on completion however we want to go further with them. We have
plans to create a performance art or movable sculpture with them set to
music.
